Punjab Legislators Resign from AAP Amid Party Tensions

Two Punjab MLAs resign from AAP, citing internal conflicts as the party faces scrutiny over its leadership decisions.

Chandigarh, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : Two members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from Punjab have resigned from their positions, triggering a wave of speculation and criticism. The resignations, announced on October 1, 2026, involve Harmit Singh Pathanmajra, the MLA for Sanour, and Chetan Singh Jodhamajra, representing Samana.

Harmit Singh Pathanmajra, elected in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, cited internal party actions against him as a reason for his departure. Following these actions, he adopted a confrontational stance against the party, ultimately leading to his resignation.

Chetan Singh Jodhamajra also announced his resignation through a social media post, stating that he was stepping down from the primary membership of AAP. His decision came after his name was notably absent from the party’s recent candidate list.

In the 2022 elections, Jodhamajra won a significant victory under the AAP banner and later served as a cabinet minister in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government. His recent resignation raises questions about the party’s internal dynamics.

In response to the resignations, AAP’s Punjab president Aman Arora expressed disappointment, asserting that the party prioritizes Punjab’s interests. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to recruit individuals expelled from AAP, implying that the BJP lacks genuine support in Punjab.

Baltej Pannu, AAP’s general secretary and media in-charge, echoed these sentiments, stating that the two legislators had already been sidelined by the party before their resignations. He characterized the BJP as a party that primarily attracts those rejected by other political groups.

The unfolding situation highlights ongoing tensions within AAP as it navigates its political landscape in Punjab.
