Chandigarh, May 1: The Punjab government convened a special session of the Assembly on Labor Day. Amid speculation about the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann presented a confidence motion for the Punjab government. During this session, the Chief Minister announced a significant gift for workers, declaring a 15% increase in the minimum wage. This decision will apply to both public and private sectors.
The confidence motion was passed by a voice vote in the Assembly. During this time, the BJP, Congress, and Akali Dal staged a walkout, allowing the motion to pass unanimously. Consequently, Bhagwant Mann’s government is now secure for the next six months.
While addressing the Assembly, Bhagwant Mann asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party remains strong and united. He stated, “The broom of AAP will continue to cleanse Indian politics.”
Earlier in the session, the Chief Minister emphasized that quality education could transform the lives of workers and their families. He reiterated the importance of education, noting that children from poor families are succeeding in exams, proving that every child can excel when given the right opportunities. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring quality education in government schools.
The Assembly erupted in chaos when the main opposition party, Congress, demanded breath analyzer and drug tests for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and all legislators. Following a heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition on this International Labor Day session, Congress legislators staged a walkout.
Leader of the Opposition, Pratap Singh Bajwa, accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of appearing intoxicated in the House and called for all legislators to undergo alcohol testing in a closed room.
Congress argued that questions had arisen regarding the behavior and physical condition of some members during the proceedings, making medical testing essential for transparency and accountability.
After the walkout, several Congress legislators went to the Speaker’s office, insisting on an “alcometer” test for all members, which escalated tensions within the Assembly complex.
Intense exchanges were witnessed inside the House. The opposition was accused of disrupting proceedings and diminishing the dignity of the Assembly, prompting the Speaker to intervene multiple times. However, opposition parties also staged protests within the Assembly premises.
