Jamtara, August 1: Protests led by opposition leader Babulal Marandi erupted in Jamtara, Jharkhand, on Friday. The demonstrations were in response to the alleged negligence that led to the death of a mother and her newborn at the district hospital. Activists also opposed the filing of FIRs against those who protested the incident.
BJP workers rallied from the hospital to the district collectorate, chanting slogans against the state government and district administration. During the assembly, leaders criticized the government on various issues, including healthcare, recruitment exams, employment, education, road conditions, law and order, and corruption.
The incident that sparked the protests occurred on July 17 when a woman named Reena Devi and her newborn died, leading to public outrage, vandalism, and road blockades. Following the incident, the hospital administration filed a complaint that resulted in FIRs against BJP district president Sumit Sharan, district general secretary Kamlesh Mandal, youth wing district president Kunal Singh, municipal president Pradeep Rawat, and several unnamed individuals. Babulal Marandi condemned this as a tyrannical action by the government.
In his speech, Marandi claimed that the healthcare system in Jharkhand is in disarray. He accused the government of prioritizing its interests over the public’s problems. He raised concerns about the poor state of hospitals and government ambulance services, alleging corruption in the tender process that benefits close associates of the government. He also highlighted issues related to illegal mining and irregularities in the sand, iron, and coal trades.
Despite the state’s rich mineral resources, Marandi asserted that the public is not reaping the expected benefits. He pointed out alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC recruitment exams, accusing the government of lacking transparency. Former MP Sunil Soreng accused the administration of biased actions and urged officials to work impartially. Former minister Randhir Singh questioned the state of health services and accused the district administration of working under pressure.
Former MLA and BJP candidate from Jamtara, Sita Soreng, criticized the government’s six-and-a-half-year tenure as a failure, raising issues regarding health, employment, and education. She alleged that legal actions are being taken against youth who voice their demands.
