Prime Minister Modi Advocates Selfless Service Through Ancient Wisdom

New Delhi, August 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently shared a profound message on the social media platform X, emphasizing the importance of selfless service. He quoted a Sanskrit verse that highlights the virtue of altruism without any expectation of return.

In his post, he wrote, “किं चन्द्रमाः प्रत्युपकारलिप्सया करोति गोभिः कुमुदावबोधनम्. स्वभाव एवोन्नतचेतसां सतां परोपकारव्यसनं हि जीवितम्॥”

The translation of this verse is, “The moon does not illuminate the lotus with the desire for reciprocation; rather, it is its inherent quality. Similarly, noble and generous individuals serve others selflessly, as altruism is part of their nature.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Prime Minister shared another verse: “विश्वस्वं मातरमोषधीनां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीं धर्मणा धृताम्. शिवां स्योनामनु चरेम विश्वहा॥” The meaning of this verse is, “May our Mother Earth, which produces all kinds of superior plants and medicines, remain vast and stable. Let us always serve our motherland, which is nurtured by virtues like knowledge, valor, truth, and affection, and which provides welfare and happiness.”

On Wednesday, he wrote, “Spiritual development instills a sense of service, dedication, and nation-building within individuals. Inspired by this, our youth are advancing the country in every field.” He also included the verse, “आत्मोदयः परज्यानिर्द्वयं नीतिरितीयती. तदूरीकृत्य कृतिभिर्वाचस्पत्यं प्रतायते.” This translates to, “Uplifting oneself and continuously progressing is the true policy of life. Based on this aim, knowledgeable and wise individuals expand their knowledge, skills, and influence to contribute positively to society.”

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister stated, “Continuous effort and practice enhance our talents. Today, our youth embody these qualities and are bringing glory to the nation worldwide.” He shared another Sanskrit verse, “न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते. तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्ध: कालेनात्मनि विन्दति॥” The meaning is that nothing purifies like knowledge in this world. A practitioner whose heart is thoroughly cleansed through karma yoga or meditation will eventually experience that supreme knowledge within their soul at the right time.
