Pope Leo XIV Welcomes US-Iran Agreement, Calls for Peace in the Middle East

Vatican City, June 17: Pope Leo XIV expressed his joy on Wednesday over the agreement reached between the United States and Iran to end their conflict. He described it as a result of “encouraging efforts” in dialogue and negotiation.

During the weekly General Audience, the Pope stated, “This agreement can help strengthen mutual trust, security, and stability in the Middle East, provided that pathways for dialogue and cooperation between nations are pursued.”

He expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the discussions and hoped that this initiative would contribute to establishing long-lasting peace in the region.

According to Vatican News, the Pope also mentioned the “tragic” situation of the war in Ukraine during his address, urging for pathways to dialogue to establish peace there. He expressed solidarity with those who have lost loved ones, been injured, and those who continue to serve humanity under difficult circumstances.

It is noteworthy that the conflict began on February 28 with a joint attack by the US and Israel on Iran, targeting several high-ranking officials, including Supreme Iranian Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Since then, airstrikes have continued.

Tehran retaliated by targeting US military installations in Gulf countries, resulting in the loss of many innocent lives. After 40 days and a temporary ceasefire, on June 14, the US President announced the peace deal, which has been praised worldwide. Both countries are set to sign the peace agreement this coming Friday.

Throughout the conflict, the Pope had recommended that the US and Israel cease hostilities, a suggestion that met with strong objections from President Trump, who argued that such a statement would allow Iran to pursue nuclear weapons.
