Dhanbad, July 15: In a dramatic display of political power, BJP MP Dhullu Mahto and CPI(ML)-backed MLA Aroop Chatterjee faced off in Nirsa, Dhanbad district, over the proposed elevated road project worth approximately ₹400 crore. Both leaders organized separate events simultaneously, showcasing their political strength and exchanging accusations.
Despite the tense atmosphere, both events concluded peacefully under strict administrative supervision, with no incidents of violence reported. BJP MP Dhullu Mahto addressed a gathering near the construction site alongside party and labor union workers. He accused local MLA Aroop Chatterjee of obstructing this crucial road project for personal gain.
Mahto asserted that development work would not be halted under any circumstances and promised to respond democratically to those creating obstacles. In contrast, MLA Aroop Chatterjee led a protest march under the banner of CPI(ML) and the Bihar Colliery Workers Union. He clarified that his opposition was not against development but aimed at addressing alleged corruption and irregularities associated with the project.
Chatterjee accused Mahto and his associates of attempting to gain illegal financial benefits and land control under the guise of the project. He also alleged that the project was being exploited to enhance political influence. In light of the events, the administration remained vigilant.
Superintendent of Police S. Mohammad Yaqub personally monitored the situation in Nirsa. Additional police forces, armored vehicles, riot control units, and other security resources were deployed in sensitive areas. Preventive actions had already been taken against several individuals due to potential tensions. Political accusations between the two leaders regarding the elevated road project have intensified in recent days.
Recently, MLA Aroop Chatterjee claimed he received threats linked to gangsters, questioning the MP’s involvement in the matter. Conversely, MP Dhullu Mahto dismissed these allegations, accusing Chatterjee of harboring criminals. He has also sent a defamation notice for ₹2 crore to Chatterjee.
