New Delhi, August 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Indian athletes who excelled at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Sunday at 4 PM. India had a remarkable performance, securing a total of 39 medals, including 13 golds.
Despite the absence of key sports like wrestling, badminton, hockey, and shooting, Indian athletes showcased exceptional talent at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The event marked several historic achievements for India. In judo, the country won two gold medals for the first time in Commonwealth Games history. Asmita Devi secured the first gold, followed by Harsh Singh, who also clinched gold for the nation. Overall, India earned four medals in judo.
Indian boxers delivered their best performance in Commonwealth Games history, winning 10 medals, including 7 golds. Female boxers shone brightly, contributing 5 golds out of 7 events. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh made history as the first Indian athlete to win two medals in track and field at the same Commonwealth Games. He earned a silver in the 10,000 meters and a bronze in the 5,000 meters.
Weightlifting also saw impressive performances from Indian athletes, who secured a total of 8 medals. Mirabai Chanu made history by winning gold for the third consecutive Commonwealth Games, becoming the first weightlifter in the world to achieve a gold hat-trick. Lovepreet Singh set a new record in the snatch round, winning silver. Additionally, para-athletes from India made significant contributions, winning 7 medals. Sharmila Dhankhar became the first para-athlete to win gold in shot put for India, while Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Soman Rana also secured gold in their respective events.
India finished fourth in the medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with 13 golds, 17 silvers, and 9 bronzes. Upon their return, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur honored all medal-winning athletes. The minister awarded 30 lakh rupees to gold medalists, 20 lakh to silver medalists, and 10 lakh to bronze medalists.
