Planning for Retirement: How to Secure a Monthly Income of ₹50,000

Discover how to invest wisely to achieve a monthly retirement income of ₹50,000, considering inflation and life expectancy.

New Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Retirement planning goes beyond merely saving money; it’s about creating a fund that provides a steady income after leaving the workforce. With rising inflation and increasing life expectancy, financial experts recommend starting investments as early as possible.

A popular option for generating regular income post-retirement is the Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP). This allows investors to withdraw a fixed amount monthly or quarterly while preserving their principal investment. Many retirees rely on this method to meet their monthly financial needs.

Before determining your retirement fund, it’s essential to assess your lifestyle, family requirements, health expenses, inflation, and future needs. A common guideline suggests that your retirement corpus should be approximately 300 times your current monthly expenses.

Investors should choose a mix of equity, Public Provident Fund (PPF), Employee Provident Fund (EPF), National Pension System (NPS), bonds, and other investment options based on their age, risk tolerance, and financial goals. Additionally, maintaining an emergency fund and insurance is crucial to prevent unexpected expenses from impacting your retirement savings.

For those aiming for a monthly income of ₹50,000 after retirement, the required investment varies based on age and other factors. Assuming a life expectancy of 85 years, an inflation rate of 6%, and an average return on investment of 12%, the necessary monthly contributions differ significantly.

For instance, if a person starts investing at age 20 and plans to retire at 60, they would need to invest approximately ₹13,114 each month, potentially accumulating a corpus of around ₹15.42 crore. Starting at 25 would require a monthly investment of about ₹17,928, leading to an estimated fund of ₹11.52 crore.

If investments begin at age 30, the monthly contribution would increase to around ₹24,650, resulting in a corpus of approximately ₹8.61 crore. Similarly, starting at 35 would necessitate a monthly investment of ₹34,265 to reach a corpus of about ₹6.43 crore. For those beginning at 40, the monthly investment would rise to around ₹48,630, yielding a fund of approximately ₹4.81 crore.

These calculations assume that investments will continue even after retirement, with an expected return of around 6%. Financial experts stress that the key to effective retirement planning is to start early. The longer your investment period, the greater the benefits of compounding, which reduces the pressure of monthly contributions needed to achieve your financial goals.
