Para Athletics Success Inspires Mainstream Athletes, Says Coach Satyanarayan

Glasgow, July 30: Following India’s remarkable gold and silver wins in the men’s 100 meters T47 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, para-athletics coach Satyanarayan Shimoga stated that the success of para sports is motivating mainstream athletes to believe they can also win medals on a global stage.

India achieved a memorable finish in the para-athletics competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinched the gold medal with a games record in the men’s 100 meters T47, while compatriot Mohammad Basil Morasinghankathi secured silver, reinforcing India’s dominance.

Satyanarayan remarked, “The success of para sports has led mainstream athletes to believe they can win medals. We always tell our athletes to work hard, and good results will follow. Today, India is performing exceptionally well in para sports.”

He also mentioned that he advised Dilip, who previously participated in the 400 meters, to shift to the 100 meters, which proved beneficial. The coach expressed, “I anticipated that Dilip and Basil would finish first and second, and that’s exactly what happened. Dilip used to run the 400 meters, but I moved him to the 100 meters. I sent him to Dubai, where he qualified for the CWG.”

Dilip, born in a small village near Nashik, Maharashtra, faced a significant turning point in his life when he fell from a tree at the age of five or six, severely injuring his right arm. Due to a lack of timely medical treatment, the injury led to amputation below the elbow.

Despite such a major setback, Dilip did not allow his condition to dictate his future. He pursued a career in para-athletics, fulfilling his passion for running. While practicing on the dusty roads of his village, his talent was later recognized by coach Vaijnath Kale, who guided him into professional para-athletics. Satyanarayan noted, “Despite facing such significant challenges in life, God showed him a path to achieve greatness, and we all supported him.”

Dilip previously won gold in the men’s 400 meters T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, marking India’s historic 100th medal at the Games. He also made the nation proud by reaching the finals of the men’s 400 meters T47 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
