Pakistans Path to T20 World Cup Semifinals: Key Scenarios Against Sri Lanka

Kandy, February 28: The final match of Group 2’s Super 8 in the T20 World Cup 2026 is set to take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on Saturday. While Sri Lanka has already been eliminated from semifinal contention, Pakistan has a chance to advance by securing a significant victory over Sri Lanka. However, they must also navigate some crucial scenarios to qualify.

England has already qualified for the semifinals from Group 2, winning all three of their matches and accumulating six points. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is out of the race. Both Pakistan and New Zealand still have opportunities to reach the semifinals.

New Zealand’s journey has been complicated; their first match was washed out due to rain, earning them one point. They then secured two points by defeating Sri Lanka in their second match. However, they faced a setback in their third match on Friday, which has made their path to the semifinals more challenging while keeping Pakistan’s hopes alive.

Currently, New Zealand has three points and a net run rate of +1.390.

Looking at Pakistan’s Super 8 performance, they gained one point from the rain-affected match against New Zealand but suffered a loss to England.

With only one point from two matches, Pakistan has a net run rate of -0.461.

In the upcoming match against Sri Lanka on Saturday evening, Pakistan needs more than just a win; they must also improve their net run rate to surpass New Zealand’s. A victory over Sri Lanka will earn Pakistan two points, bringing their total to three, but they must either win by 64 runs or chase any target in 13.1 overs to achieve a better net run rate than New Zealand.

Achieving one of these two scenarios will secure Pakistan’s place in the semifinals.

A simple win or a rain-affected match could see New Zealand qualify instead.

As co-hosts of the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka will also be aiming to win their final match against Pakistan to restore some pride.
