Kandy, February 28: Pakistan secured a narrow victory against Sri Lanka by just five runs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday. Despite the win, the team failed to qualify for the semifinals. Following the match, Pakistani captain Salman Agha highlighted the significance of the toss and the impact of dew on the game.
Batting first, Pakistan managed to score 212 runs after losing 8 wickets. To reach the semifinals, they needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 runs or fewer, a target they could not achieve. Sri Lanka finished their innings with 207 runs, losing 6 wickets.
After being eliminated from the title race, Agha stated, “Losing the toss made the match challenging, as dew was a major factor. If we had won the toss, the outcome could have been different. The dew affected our performance, and we couldn’t execute our plans effectively. Usman had an off day, which can happen. Throughout the tournament, our batting has not been up to par. If Farhan had received a bit more support, the situation could have improved.”
In this crucial match, Pakistan lost their first wicket in just 15.5 overs, ultimately scoring only 212 runs. Openers Sahibzada Farhan (100) and Fakhar Zaman (84) were the only players to reach double digits, while the rest of the batting lineup faltered.
Agha added, “The middle order has been a problem for us in recent years, and we need to address this. We couldn’t finish the match as we wanted. We batted well until the 18th over, but the opposition bowled excellently in the final two overs. Even a score of 160 might have been difficult to defend.”
On the other hand, Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka expressed disappointment after the loss, saying, “It was a close match, and we could have finished it with a win. Shaheen Afridi bowled brilliantly. This phase has been quite challenging for me as captain. Yes, we are disappointed, and I want to apologize to our fans. Unfortunately, we faced injuries. I hope we won’t have such issues in the future. Our two key bowlers, Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana, were unavailable. We hope they return soon and perform well for Sri Lankan cricket.”
He continued, “Sometimes, as players, we feel the pressure. It was a mistake, and I apologize for disappointing our fans. We are extremely grateful for all the support we received. Rathnayake has been consistent and utilized the crease well. We also have young players like Dunith Wellalage, who are continuously progressing.”
