Islamabad, December 2: Pakistan’s government has finally bowed to domestic and international pressure by allowing Uzma Khanam, sister of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, to meet him in jail. Khan is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail. Local media reported this development citing jail officials.
According to Dawn, Uzma went inside the jail to meet her brother while several PTI supporters had gathered outside the prison premises.
This news comes at a time when Section 144 has been imposed in Pakistan’s twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Earlier, State Minister for Home Talal Chaudhry had issued strict instructions that anyone violating Section 144 regulations would face stern action.
After the former Prime Minister’s family and PTI members were denied permission to meet him for several weeks, PTI had decided on Tuesday to stage protests outside Islamabad High Court and Adiala Jail against the ban on the former Prime Minister’s visitation rights.
State Minister for Home Talal Chaudhry said that Section 144 would be strictly enforced in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Speaking to media in Islamabad, Chaudhry warned, “Whether they come to Islamabad High Court (IHC) or Adiala Jail, action will be taken under Section 144 without any discrimination.” He specifically appealed to PTI-supported parliamentarians to “follow the law”.
Section 144 of Pakistan’s Criminal Procedure Code is a legal provision that gives district administration the authority to temporarily ban the assembly of four or more people in any area for a certain period.
