Mumbai, August 6: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that outpatient department (OPD) services at Khan Bahadur Bhabha Hospital in Kurla West will be suspended today, August 6, in support of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) movement. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors at Khan Bahadur Bhabha Hospital (KBBH MARD) informed the hospital administration via a letter regarding this decision.
The association stated that KBBH MARD has chosen to halt routine outpatient services in solidarity with the movement called by BMC MARD. This protest is in strong opposition to the proposed registration of CCM-qualified BHMS practitioners by the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).
In their letter, KBBH MARD expressed, “We believe that such a proposal compromises established standards of modern medical education and training. It undermines the integrity and reliability of the Maharashtra Medical Council registration system and raises serious concerns about patient safety and the quality of healthcare.”
KBBH MARD further assured that all emergency and essential health services would continue without interruption, prioritizing patient welfare. This includes casualty services, emergency care, intensive care units, labor rooms, emergency operation theaters, and urgent care for hospitalized patients. Only routine OPD services will be suspended during the protest.
MARD indicated that the future direction of the movement will depend on the government’s response to the issues raised by the medical community. If a satisfactory resolution is not reached, BMC MARD plans to escalate their protest. They will also take more stringent legal and democratic actions to uphold the standards of modern medical education, protect the reliability of the Maharashtra Medical Council registration system, and ensure patient care.
