Orionid Meteor Shower Peaks This Week Amid Bright Moon Challenge
The Orionid meteor shower is expected to peak during the early hours of Thursday, providing good viewing opportunities despite a bright moon.

The Orionid meteor shower peaks in the early hours of Thursday, offering a display for those willing to endure the late hours. Sky-watchers can expect to see up to 20 meteors per hour as Earth passes through debris left by Halley’s Comet.
Optimal viewing will occur after midnight local time, as the meteor shower aligns with a waxing gibbous moon that will be 76% illuminated. This bright moon, approaching full phase on October 26, may obscure some of the fainter meteors, according to the American Meteor Society.
NASA explains that Orionid meteors travel fast, entering Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of around 41 miles per second. Some meteors may leave visible trails lasting several seconds, and larger fragments can create bright fireballs as they disintegrate.
Viewability Conditions
Weather conditions will play a significant role in visibility. Many areas, particularly in the central and eastern U.S., are expected to have clear skies, enhancing chances for optimal viewing. However, parts of the West Coast, including California and the Four Corners region, may face challenges with cloud cover and rain, making it more difficult to see the meteors.
In Seattle, the clear skies this October provide an excellent backdrop for viewing the Orionids, which remain visible until November 7. Ted Buehner, a KIRO Newsradio meteorologist, noted this year’s conditions are unusual for the region, where cloudy skies typically obscure the shower.
Viewing Tips
For the best experience, experts recommend finding a dark area away from city lights and lying back in a reclining chair for a wider field of view. The meteors will appear to radiate from the Orion constellation but can be seen across the sky.
As the Orionids peak, more meteor showers are expected as the year comes to a close. Stargazers should prepare for other celestial events later in the season.
