New Delhi, February 9: Samajwadi Party MP Ikra Hasan has expressed concerns regarding the conduct of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, stating that he is the guardian of the House and that the opposition deserves his protection as well.
Hasan highlighted that the opposition is often silenced within the House, with the Leader of the Opposition frequently interrupted. In a conversation in New Delhi, she emphasized, “The position of the Leader of the Opposition is crucial, often referred to as the shadow Prime Minister. Questioning and debate are essential to our democracy; it is the Speaker’s responsibility to uphold this. The opposition demands that the Speaker provide them the opportunity to speak. We must keep the spirit of democracy alive in this country.”
She further criticized the government for not allowing discussions during the ongoing budget session, suggesting that the administration is trying to suppress scrutiny of its actions. “There should have been an important discussion on the budget today. After its presentation, the opposition has the right to question. However, we are not being allowed to speak. It appears that the government wants to stifle democracy. The government must facilitate discussions where the opposition can voice its concerns,” Hasan stated.
Referring to the Uttar Pradesh government, Hasan noted that individuals close to power, particularly those associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are receiving preferential treatment. “The way law and order has been undermined is troubling. I am confident that the people of Uttar Pradesh will respond to the BJP in the 2027 assembly elections,” she concluded.
