Opposition Criticizes Jharkhand Government Over Alleged Rape Incident at Gamharia Police Station
Political tensions rise in Jharkhand after a woman alleges rape by police at Gamharia station, prompting calls for accountability.

Ranchi, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : Political tensions are escalating in Jharkhand following an alleged rape incident involving a woman at the Gamharia police station in the Saraikela-Kharsawan district. Opposition leaders Babulal Marandi and former Chief Minister Champai Soren have launched strong criticisms against the state government, asserting that this incident highlights a breakdown in law and order.
Marandi described the alleged assault as both shameful and alarming. He pointed out a prior incident involving the sexual exploitation of a female inmate at the Birsa Munda Central Jail, raising concerns about women’s safety in institutions meant to protect them. “If women are not safe in places responsible for their security, whom can they trust for justice?” he questioned.
Marandi also cast doubt on the role of Director General of Police Tadasha Mishra, noting that incidents of sexual abuse against women in police stations and jails during her tenure are deeply troubling. He accused the DGP of being distracted by other activities instead of focusing on improving police operations and ensuring women’s safety. He urged the Superintendent of Police in Saraikela to ensure strict legal action against the accused officer.
Former Chief Minister Champai Soren labeled the incident an example of “jungle raj,” or lawlessness, in the state. He recounted that the woman had approached the police to report domestic disputes and alleged abuse from her husband. Instead of receiving help, she was allegedly raped by a police officer after being advised to stay overnight at the station.
The woman, a resident of Dugdha village, had gone to the police station late Thursday night. During her stay, it is alleged that wireless operator Neeraj Lakra took her to a room and assaulted her. In response to the incident, Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiyari ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by SDPO Anubhav Bhardwaj. Lakra has since been arrested and placed in judicial custody. Additionally, four police personnel, including the station officer, have been suspended, and the room where the incident occurred has been sealed to preserve evidence.
