No Place for Bulldozer Politics in West Bengal: Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata, March 28: Abhishek Banerjee, the All India General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, stated on Saturday that there is no room for the BJP’s bulldozer-style politics in West Bengal.

Using his X handle, Banerjee commented on the violence that erupted during the Ram Navami procession in Murshidabad district’s Raghunathganj, following several administrative changes made by the Election Commission in the state.

He expressed concern that the BJP aims to impose a similar ‘change’ on Bengal. Immediately after the announcement of elections, the Election Commission initiated extensive administrative reshuffles, replacing key officials including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, ADG, IG, SP, DM, Kolkata Police Commissioner, and even the KMC Commissioner. Such unprecedented interventions raise serious questions about intentions and timing.

Banerjee further noted that the aftermath of these changes is even more alarming. Under the guise of these adjustments, incidents of intimidation are rising, shops are being vandalized, communal tensions are being stoked, and ordinary citizens are facing harassment. “We do not need a ‘bulldozer model.’ We do not need imported politics of hatred and violence,” he asserted.

According to the Trinamool Congress leader, our identity is rooted in our shared culture, the festivals we celebrate together, and our respect for each other’s beliefs. He emphasized the importance of communal harmony in society and highlighted how West Bengal has played a leading role in this regard.

Banerjee pointed out that for generations, Bengal has celebrated Durga Puja, Diwali, Poila Boishakh, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Christmas together without fear, division, or violence. Yet, in recent days, the state has witnessed a disturbing glimpse of the ‘changes’ being imposed on this land of revolutionaries.

He remarked that the land of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda has always symbolized tolerance, harmony, and coexistence. For decades, Bengal has been a living example of unity in diversity.

In his post, Banerjee stressed that no one should benefit from such politics. Today, the very social fabric appears to be under strain. The question remains: who is gaining from this disruption, and what price is the people of Bengal paying? “The Election Commission and the BJP should be ashamed!” he concluded.
