Nitish Kumar Resigns from Bihar Legislative Council Membership

Patna, March 30: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned from his membership in the Legislative Council following his election to the Rajya Sabha. This announcement was made on Monday.

JD(U) leader and Bihar minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed that Kumar had already been declared elected to the Rajya Sabha, making his resignation constitutionally necessary. Kumar will formally relinquish his Legislative Council membership today. MLC Sanjay Gandhi accompanied Kumar to submit his resignation letter, and the Chairman will initiate the next steps in the process.

With this move, there is speculation about a potential leadership change in Bihar. However, the situation regarding Kumar’s continuation as Chief Minister remains unclear. Nitish Kumar has been a member of the Legislative Council since 2006. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, which sparked discussions about his resignation from the Legislative Council.

Kumar is among the few leaders who have served in all four legislative bodies. During his campaign for the Rajya Sabha, he expressed his desire to be elected to this upper house, prompting his decision to resign.

Kumar first entered the assembly in 1985 from the Harnaut constituency and was elected to the Ninth Lok Sabha in 1989. He has consistently served in the Legislative Council since 2006 and is now set to begin a new chapter as a Rajya Sabha member. Reports suggest he will take his oath on April 10.

Throughout his career, Kumar has held significant positions in the central government, including Minister of Railways and Minister of Agriculture, where he implemented extensive reforms. He has been the Chief Minister of Bihar since 2005, earning the nickname ‘Sushasan Babu’ for his governance. His administration has introduced several notable initiatives, including liquor prohibition, a bicycle scheme, and 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj.
