NHRC Takes Notice of Udaipur School Incident After Three Students Injured by Falling Plaster
The NHRC has intervened after three students were injured at a dilapidated school in Udaipur, Rajasthan, due to falling plaster.

Udaipur, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of an incident in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where three students were injured after plaster fell from the ceiling of a dilapidated government primary school.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on October 6 at a public school in Narada village, located in the Bhinder police station area. The plaster collapsed suddenly while 32 children were present in the classroom.
The injured students, aged between 7 to 8 years, suffered head injuries. The accident took place around 11 AM, and there were no teachers present in the school at the time. The students managed to return home on their own, after which their parents took them to a hospital for treatment.
The NHRC stated that if the media reports are accurate, this constitutes a serious violation of human rights. Following this, the commission issued a notice to the district magistrate of Udaipur, requesting a detailed report within two weeks. This report is expected to include information about the health status of the injured students.
Reports indicate that the three injured children were initially treated at Bhinder Government Hospital and were later discharged. In response to the incident, the education department and local administration closed the school building and arranged for classes to be held at an alternative location near a nearby religious site.
The school’s principal, Lalsingh Shaktawat, noted that the institution caters to students up to the fifth grade and has a total enrollment of 37 children. He further mentioned that the school administration had previously alerted the education department about the building’s poor condition.
The school, built in 2001, has two classrooms and a veranda, all of which are in a deteriorating state. Local residents have claimed that they have repeatedly complained to authorities about the building’s hazardous condition, but no substantial action has been taken.
This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of children attending government schools in Rajasthan, many of which are housed in aging and poorly maintained buildings.
