NHRC Takes Action on Womans Assault in Gujarat and Contaminated Water in Maharashtra

NHRC investigates serious human rights violations in Gujarat and Maharashtra regarding a womans assault and contaminated water supply.

Surendranagar, Maharashtra, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated action following media reports of a married woman being assaulted by her husband and family members in Surendranagar, Gujarat. In a separate case, the NHRC is also addressing reports of contaminated water from a borewell in Nashik, Maharashtra.

The NHRC, upon reviewing the allegations, stated that if the claims are accurate, they represent a serious violation of human rights. The commission has issued notices to the district magistrate and police superintendent of Surendranagar, requesting a detailed report within two weeks.

This report must include the victim’s current health status and any compensation she has received. According to media sources, the woman was located by her husband and relatives, who were furious about her living with another man. They allegedly lured the couple back to Surendranagar under the pretext of conducting a “purification ritual.”

Reports indicate that the woman was beaten with sticks, kicked, and tied to a tree. Allegations also suggest that the assailants forced the man accompanying her to rape her. This incident gained public attention when a video of the assault went viral on social media.

In the second case, the NHRC has responded to reports of contaminated borewell water in the Dutta Nagar area near the Ambad industrial zone in Nashik. It is believed that chemicals leaking from nearby factories have polluted the water supply.

The NHRC has issued a notice to Maharashtra’s chief secretary, demanding a comprehensive report on this matter within two weeks. The commission has also sought comments from the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board.

According to reports from October 7, residents of Dutta Nagar have been receiving contaminated borewell water for the past two months. Local residents have been advised not to send their children to school, and doctors have recommended that women in the area avoid pregnancy.

Residents are spending nearly 5,000 rupees monthly to buy clean drinking water, in addition to incurring significant medical expenses.
