New Zealand PM Luxon Unveils Fuel Crisis Management Plan Amid Hormuz Tensions

New Delhi, May 11: Amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States, a global oil crisis is unfolding. Countries worldwide are on high alert regarding the oil and economic situation. In this context, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has outlined his strategy to address the impending fuel crisis.

PM Luxon released a video on the social media platform X, sharing his plan to prepare for potential future fuel shortages. He emphasized that this update to their fuel response plan ensures New Zealand is ready in case of a prolonged global fuel shortage.

“I have just provided an update on our fuel response plan to ensure that if there is ever a long-term fuel shortage worldwide, New Zealand will be well-prepared. I want to reassure everyone concerned about this issue that New Zealand’s fuel supply is robust. Supplies are coming in, and shortages are highly unlikely. In fact, we might not even see a 30% shortfall in diesel within a month, and any disruption in supply could last up to six months,” he stated.

Luxon further explained that following visits to Singapore and South Korea, their refineries have successfully identified alternative sources of crude oil. This oil can be processed and shipped to New Zealand. However, as a responsible Prime Minister and government, they are planning ahead to ensure they can effectively manage a severe fuel shortage.

He added, “We have recently finalized an agreement with Genergy, which means we will have an additional 90 million liters of diesel in new tanks, expedited for completion by the end of June. This provides us with an extra nine days of diesel cover, which is crucial. The fuel response plan we discussed today ensures that in phase four, a scenario with a long-term significant disruption to our fuel supply, we will prioritize essential services, food and freight transport, and other commercial activities, including public fuel usage.”

PM Luxon also mentioned, “As I said earlier, this is indeed an unfortunate situation. We are confident that our fuel importers have confirmed orders until July and planned orders through August. Given the decisions we made earlier, we are in a strong position. Please do not panic about the fuel situation; we have a solid supply. Just rest assured that if we face any unfortunate events or challenging circumstances, we are well-prepared for those situations.”
