New York City Passes Thrill Law Banning Horse-Drawn Carriages in Memory of Indian Teen

New York City enacts Thrill Law to ban horse-drawn carriages, honoring Indian teen Romanch Mahajan who tragically lost his life.

New York, October 23 (Daily Kiran) : The New York City Council approved a significant new law on Thursday, dubbed the ‘Thrill Law,’ which prohibits horse-drawn carriages. This legislation honors Romanch Mahajan, a young Indian tourist who tragically died in a related accident in Central Park.

Romanch, who was just a teenager, lost his life in June while trying to save his mother, Priya Mahajan, during a chaotic incident involving a runaway horse. The horse bolted, causing the carriage to tip over, leading to Romanch’s fatal injury as he jumped in an attempt to rescue his mother.

Prior to the bill’s passage, Romanch’s uncle, Gaurav Mahajan, participated in a rally outside City Hall advocating for the ban. He emphasized, “True justice will be served when it is recognized that these gentle and beautiful horses are not suited for crowded streets and dangerous traffic.” He urged New Yorkers to remember Romanch and his family.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin highlighted that the approval of the ‘Thrill Law’ reflects the council’s commitment to animal welfare, public safety, and worker protection. For years, animal rights activists have pushed for a ban on horse-drawn carriages, facing opposition from carriage owners and drivers’ unions.

The tragic incident involving Romanch played a pivotal role in advancing this legislation. The bill now awaits the signature of Mayor Jorhan Mamdani. However, even if the mayor declines to sign, the law will still take effect due to the overwhelming support it received in the council, effectively nullifying any potential veto.

Romanch Mahajan had recently completed his 12th grade at Angels Public School in Pathankot and was visiting New York with his parents and brother. The family was enjoying a leisurely stroll in Central Park when the driver halted the carriage to take photos, leading to the unfortunate accident when the horse unexpectedly bolted.
