Harsha Gibbs Warns South African Bowlers Ahead of Second Day in Cape Town Test

Harsha Gibbs advises South African bowlers to remain cautious as the pitch becomes more favorable for batting on the second day of the Test.

Cape Town, October 28 (Daily Kiran) : In Cape Town, South Africa’s first innings in the third and final Test against Australia ended at 329 runs, following a remarkable performance by Mitchell Starc, who claimed six wickets. Former South African batsman Harsha Gibbs has cautioned his team’s bowlers to stay alert, predicting that the pitch will favor batsmen on the second day.

After being bowled out for 329, Gibbs noted that Australia’s batsmen will have a significant opportunity to score runs. He took to social media platform X on Wednesday, stating, “Today, the skies are completely clear at Newlands, making it an excellent time for batting. Score heavily.”

Having played domestic cricket in Cape Town and scored two Test centuries at Newlands, Gibbs emphasized the importance of the batting conditions on the second and third days of the match. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Australia’s bowling attack but expressed concerns about the stability of South Africa’s batting lineup.

Earlier, Gibbs mentioned, “Newlands offers the best batting conditions on the second and third days. We need to bowl well, but South Africa’s batting lineup is not yet settled.” Australia captain Pat Cummins opted to bowl first, and South Africa initially appeared strong, reaching 158 runs without losing a wicket. However, Nathan Lyon’s breakthrough in the 32nd over opened the door for a remarkable Australian comeback, with Starc dismantling South Africa’s middle and lower order.

Starc’s impressive figures of six wickets for 72 runs in 16.3 overs included a devastating spell where he took four wickets in six balls. This performance marked the 20th occasion in his Test career that he claimed five or more wickets in an innings, turning a challenging day into a favorable situation for Australia as they head into the second day in a strong position.

With South Africa’s total at 329, Australia now has the opportunity to capitalize on the conditions Gibbs highlighted. Nevertheless, the home team’s bowlers still have a chance to apply pressure on the visiting side. Australia has selected Travis Head and Matt Renshaw to start their innings, with Renshaw aiming to replicate his earlier performance against South Africa, where he scored 190 in the first innings and 82 in the second. Meanwhile, Head enters this match after scoring 121 runs in the second innings of the previous Test. The Australian lineup has also welcomed Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, and Cooper Connolly back into the squad, providing them with several opportunities to strengthen their batting position.
