Kathmandu, 18 November (Daily Kiran). Nepali monarchy supporter Durga Prasai, who had called for a nationwide shutdown and protests from 23 November demanding the restoration of a Hindu nation, was arrested late Monday night. Kathmandu Police detained him from his residence in Bhaktapur around 1:15 am and took him to the District Police Office in Bhadrakali.

According to Kathmandu District Police Chief Ramesh Thapa, Prasai has been charged with attempting to disturb public peace and security. Earlier on Monday, Prasai had warned during a press conference that he would bring the country to a standstill from east to west.

The interim government said the arrest was made to prevent possible violence and instability linked to his announced movement. Prasai and his supporters had planned to launch a “Brihat Nagarik Mukti Andolan” (Mass Citizens’ Liberation Movement) in Kathmandu on 23 November. Prasai had claimed that more than 15 lakh people would gather in the capital for the protest.
