Ujjain, March 25: The ancient grandeur of the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is renowned worldwide. Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, the south-facing Mahakaleshwar holds a unique position, especially during the sacred ‘Bhasma Aarti’.

At dawn, the temple doors opened, and the Mahanirvani Akhara performed the first ritual, bathing Baba with holy water made from a mixture of pure milk, fresh yogurt, ghee, sugar, honey, and various fruit juices. Following this, the grand Bhasma Aarti took place, where sacred ash was offered to Baba, and the aarti was performed. During this ritual, devotees experience the divine presence of Mahakal in both formless and manifest forms.
The entire temple resonated with chants of “Jai Mahakal.” Devotees raised slogans of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Om Namah Shivaya.”
After the aarti, Lord Mahakal was beautifully adorned with garlands of flowers, bel leaves, sandalwood, and other offerings. Subsequently, the Kapoor Aarti was conducted, followed by the offering of bhog. Each day, Baba is adorned in a unique manner. Thousands of devotees from across the globe visit Ujjain to witness the Bhasma Aarti.
The Bhasma Aarti of Mahakal is not just a religious ritual; it is a living testament of faith. Men are required to wear dhotis, while women must don sarees to participate in the ceremony.
