Patna, March 16: JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar has targeted the Congress party, asserting that the authority to announce elections lies solely with the Election Commission, free from political interference.
On Sunday, the Election Commission announced assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory. Congress has raised concerns about the gap between the voting date of April 9 and the results on May 4 in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry.
In a conversation in Patna, Neeraj Kumar emphasized that it is the Election Commission’s prerogative to declare election dates. He stated that the announcement will not be made after consulting political parties. He urged opposition parties not to dictate the Commission’s responsibilities.
Kumar remarked that the Congress party and other opposition groups are still reeling from their previous defeat in Bihar, which continues to have a significant impact. He noted that they are attempting to create a favorable atmosphere ahead of the assembly elections.
Regarding the Rajya Sabha elections, he expressed confidence that despite Tejashwi Yadav’s efforts, the NDA will secure victory in five seats.
Kumar also commented on the Election Commission’s decision to remove the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary of Bengal as soon as the model code of conduct was implemented. He highlighted the ongoing allegations of political interference in administration.
He stated that political intervention in administrative duties is unjustifiable. The Election Commission holds the authority to act. He pointed out that if any incident occurs during elections in Bihar, officials will be held accountable. He noted that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tends to avoid discussing her achievements, focusing instead on issues like the SIR.
JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan added that the Election Commission can make such decisions in states where the NDA is in power. If the Commission believes that administrative changes are necessary for fair elections, it has the right to issue such directives.
In response to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s demand for the Bharat Ratna for BSP founder Kanshiram, Ranjan acknowledged Kanshiram’s significant stature in Indian politics. He stated that while Gandhi’s request is not entirely unfounded, the final decision rests with the Government of India.
