Mumbai: A delegation from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday to discuss important party matters following the tragic death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash.
The NCP leaders talked about the appointment of a new leader for the legislative party and the Deputy Chief Minister post. The delegation included party Executive President Praful Patel, state unit chief Sunil Tatkare, ministers Chhagan Bhujbal, Hasan Mushrif, and former minister Dhananjay Munde.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Praful Patel said, “We discussed the election of the new legislative party leader and Deputy Chief Minister with the Chief Minister. A meeting of the legislative party will be called soon to select the new leader.”
He further added, “We informed Chief Minister Fadnavis that decisions regarding cabinet portfolios and leadership need to be made as soon as possible. We will decide our position after consulting all our party MLAs.”
Patel emphasized that the party’s future course of action will consider the sentiments of party legislators, office bearers, and workers.
Regarding the appointment of Ajit Pawar’s wife, MP Sunetra Pawar, as Deputy Chief Minister, Patel clarified, “We did not discuss Sunetra Pawar’s name with the Chief Minister today. This is an internal party matter. We believe the decision should be appropriate and accepted by the public and our legislators.”
He added that the family is still mourning and that they plan to speak with Sunetra Pawar either tonight or tomorrow morning after some rituals are completed.
Patel reiterated that any decision regarding the Deputy Chief Minister post will be based on the feelings of the party’s legislators, and the position will be filled promptly with a suitable choice.
Earlier, NCP leader Narhari Zirwal had said after Ajit Pawar’s funeral in Baramati on Thursday that Sunetra Pawar should be appointed the next Deputy Chief Minister to continue the political legacy of the Pawar family.
