Navratri Special: The Unique Tal Barahi Temple Amidst a Lake

New Delhi, March 8: In India, numerous Shakti Peeths and Siddh Peeths are dedicated to Goddess Durga, where various forms of the deity are worshipped. Beyond India, Nepal also boasts several temples dedicated to Goddess Durga, especially vibrant during the Navratri festival with special rituals and prayers.

One such temple is the Tal Barahi Temple, located on a small island in the middle of Phewa Lake in Pokhara, Nepal. Devotees must take a boat to reach this temple, where the fierce form of Goddess Durga is revered. During Navratri, the temple attracts a significant number of visitors.

The Tal Barahi Temple is renowned for its association with the fierce form of Goddess Durga, known as Varahi Devi. It is believed that merely seeing the goddess can vanquish one’s enemies. The temple has been fulfilling the wishes of devotees for centuries, with threads of wishes tied at every door, showcasing the unwavering faith of the worshippers. Notably, the temple is not only a symbol of Hindu devotion but also attracts followers of Buddhism, especially during the Navratri festivities.

According to local lore, King Kulmandan Shah commissioned the temple’s construction after a dream in which Goddess Varahi Devi instructed him to build it. The temple is designed in the traditional pagoda style, utilizing wood, bricks, and large stones. Its expansive premises can accommodate a large number of devotees, who enjoy both boating on Phewa Lake and visiting the temple.

During Durga Puja and on Saturdays, thousands of residents from Pokhara visit the Tal Barahi Temple to pay their respects. This temple is unique in Nepal, as it is entirely situated within a lake, with no land access, requiring devotees to rely on boats to reach it.
