Navigating Fasting During Sharadiya Navratri: What to Eat and Avoid

New Delhi, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : The Sharadiya Navratri festival, celebrated in honor of Goddess Durga, holds significant importance for devotees. This year, the festivities commence on October 11, and many individuals will observe fasting for nine days, engaging in prayers and rituals according to their devotion. During this time, dietary restrictions play a crucial role, with certain foods being avoided while others are encouraged.

Traditionally, fasting during Navratri involves consuming light and sattvic (pure) meals. Fresh fruits such as bananas, apples, papayas, oranges, and pomegranates are excellent choices, providing both energy and hydration.

Dairy products like milk, yogurt, paneer, and ghee are also commonly consumed. These items help keep the stomach satisfied for longer periods. However, those who are sensitive to dairy should refrain from these foods.

Key ingredients for fasting include buckwheat flour, water chestnut flour, and samak rice. These can be used to prepare various dishes like rotis, cheelas, khichdi, or other fruit-based meals. Sabudana (tapioca pearls) is particularly popular during this time, often used to make khichdi, kheer, and vadas.

Potatoes and sweet potatoes frequently feature in fasting meals. Nuts and dried fruits, such as almonds, walnuts, cashews, and raisins, can be consumed in moderation for energy. When it comes to seasoning, rock salt (sendha namak) is preferred over regular salt during fasting.

Certain foods are strictly prohibited during Navratri. Devotees should avoid onions, garlic, wheat, rice, lentils, and other common grains. Additionally, abstaining from meat, alcohol, and other intoxicants is essential. It’s also advisable to steer clear of heavily fried, packaged, or overly processed foods.

Fasting during Navratri transcends mere dietary restrictions. It is also a time for mental discipline and self-control. Devotees focus on the worship of Goddess Durga, engage in prayers, and may recite the Durga Saptashati or other religious texts. The observance encourages avoidance of anger, falsehood, and negative thoughts, alongside adherence to celibacy.
