Berlin, April 19: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has dismissed concerns regarding the potential withdrawal of the United States from the alliance in a recent interview. Amid rising tensions in West Asia, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized NATO for not supporting the U.S. during actions against Iran. Rutte’s comments come in response to Trump’s criticisms.
In an interview published on Saturday with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Rutte expressed confidence that the U.S. would not leave NATO. He emphasized the need for a strong Europe within a robust alliance.
Recently, President Trump voiced his frustrations, stating that European allies were unwilling to support military action against Iran, labeling NATO as a “paper tiger.” White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt also indicated during a briefing that Trump is contemplating a withdrawal from NATO.
Rutte acknowledged that Trump is clearly disappointed with some NATO member countries and expressed understanding of the U.S. President’s frustrations. He reiterated that the U.S. nuclear umbrella remains the ultimate guarantor of Europe’s security.
Earlier this month, amidst growing differences over the alliance’s response to the Iran conflict, Trump discussed the possibility of U.S. withdrawal from NATO during a meeting with Secretary General Rutte.
Levitt quoted Trump as saying that NATO has failed the President in his assessment. Regarding the question of withdrawal, she added, “The President has considered it, and I believe he will address it.”
Rutte acknowledged the existing tensions but noted that most allies have supported the U.S. After the meeting, he told CNN, “He is clearly disappointed, but most European countries have been helpful.”
He described the discussions as “very clear, very open.” Rutte stated that European nations provided support in terms of basing, logistics, overflights, and other assistance during the conflict. He also admitted that not all allies have met expectations.
Previously, Trump criticized NATO, asserting that the alliance has not supported the U.S. adequately. He remarked, “I am very disappointed with NATO. We spend trillions of dollars on it, but they were not with us.”
