
Kolkata, April 15: A soldier from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has died under mysterious circumstances while on election duty in Falta, located in the South 24 Parganas district. The deceased has been identified as Kanak Koch, according to officials who provided the information on Wednesday.
Kanak was serving as a constable in the ITBP. It is noteworthy that a significant number of central forces have been deployed across West Bengal for the assembly elections.
Local residents and administrative officials reported that Kanak, originally from Assam, was assigned to election duty in the Doshatpur area of Falta.
On Tuesday night, he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead by doctors.
Reports indicate that accommodations for 86 ITBP personnel were arranged at Doshatpur High School. After having dinner on Tuesday night, all personnel went to sleep.
Late at night, while heading to the restroom, another soldier found Kanak lying face down on the balcony.
He was rushed to Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
The body has been sent to the Diamond Harbour police post-mortem house for an autopsy. Initial police estimates suggest that he may have fallen down the stairs. However, the exact cause of death will be clarified once the post-mortem report is available. The police are currently awaiting this report and have initiated an investigation into the incident.
A senior officer from the Diamond Harbour police stated that an unnatural death case has been registered. Efforts are ongoing to determine how the soldier died. At first glance, it appears he may have fallen, but the investigation is still in progress.
According to the officer, the family of the deceased soldier has been informed about this tragic incident.
