New Delhi, March 26: “Destinations are achieved by those whose dreams are alive; wings alone won’t suffice, it’s the spirit that soars.” These lines perfectly encapsulate the journey of India’s star long jump athlete, Murali Sreeshankar. His unwavering determination has kept him from ever giving up. Despite facing numerous injuries, Murali has always fought back.
Born on March 27, 1999, in Palakkad, Kerala, Murali hails from an athletic family. His father, S. Murali, is a former Asian Games medalist, and his mother, K.S. Bijimol, was also an athlete.
Murali began running at the tender age of four. By thirteen, he decided to pursue a career in triple jump and later long jump. His dedication to the sport led him to achieve several significant milestones. However, in 2018, he suffered from appendicitis, which prevented him from participating in the Commonwealth Games.
Undeterred, Murali battled back and made a remarkable comeback. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he leaped an impressive 8.08 meters, earning a silver medal. His dominance continued at the 2022 Asian Games, where he secured another silver medal.
In the World Athletics Continental Tour held in Portugal, Murali clinched a gold medal. He also finished third in the Diamond League. Unfortunately, fate dealt him another blow as a knee injury sidelined him from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
With resolute intentions, Murali made yet another strong comeback, winning a gold medal at the Kosanov Memorial 2025 tournament in Kazakhstan. He was honored with the ‘Arjuna Award’ in 2024. Expectations are high for Murali as he aims to bring home more medals in the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Olympics.
