CSK Aims for Sixth IPL Title with Youthful Squad in 2026

New Delhi, March 26: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), five-time IPL champions, are entering the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) with significant changes. Once labeled the ‘Dad Army’, CSK is now relying on young talent to secure their sixth title.

Last season, CSK finished at the bottom of the points table, prompting a major overhaul within the team. The management has focused on rebuilding the squad, emphasizing the importance of youth.

Players like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Sarfaraz Khan, Prashant Veer, Kartik Sharma, and Sanju Samson, who joined through trades, exemplify this shift.

In the mini-auction before IPL 2026, CSK effectively constructed their team, addressing every minor shortcoming. As a result, they appear stronger and more energetic than ever.

When discussing CSK’s strengths, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, and explosive middle-order batsman Shivam Dube stand out. Samson and Dube were part of the recent T20 World Cup-winning Indian team, with Samson earning the ‘Player of the Tournament’ title for his exceptional batting. Gaikwad has been a consistent performer for CSK and brings valuable international experience to the team.

Ayush Mhatre and Kartik Sharma are expected to bolster the batting lineup, while MS Dhoni will take on the finisher role.

Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma are uncapped players, each acquired for ₹14.20 crores in the auction. Both will be under scrutiny as they have the opportunity to make their mark.

In the spin department, CSK boasts Prashant Veer, Noor Ahmad, Akil Hossain, and Rahul Chahar. Noor and Akil have proven their capabilities on the international stage and could become key assets for the team. Noor had an impressive performance last season, while Veer and Chahar add depth to the bowling attack.

However, CSK’s biggest weakness lies in their pace bowling, particularly during death overs. Australian pacer Nathan Ellis is out for the entire season due to injury, a significant blow as he was a crucial asset in those overs. While Matt Henry and Khaleel Ahmed are available, they have not been as effective in death overs as Ellis. Spencer Johnson and Anshul Kamboj may play important roles in the pace department.

CSK’s first match is scheduled for March 30 against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

CSK’s squad for IPL 2026 includes: Ruturaj Gaikwad (Captain), MS Dhoni, Sanju Samson, Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, Kartik Sharma, Sarfaraz Khan, Urvil Patel, Anshul Kamboj, Jamie Overton, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Prashant Veer, Matthew William Short, Aman Khan, Jack Folks, Shivam Dube, Khaleel Ahmed, Noor Ahmad, Mukesh Choudhary, Spencer Johnson, Shreyas Gopal, Gurjapneet Singh, Akil Hossain, Matt Henry, and Rahul Chahar.
