Mumbais Shor in the City: A Love Letter to the City, 15 Years Later

Mumbai, April 29: The dark comedy-crime film “Shor in the City” celebrates its 15th anniversary since release. Written and directed by Raj Nidimoru, Krishna D.K., and Sita Menon, the film has left a lasting impact on its audience.

On this special occasion, Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. shared untold memories from the film’s early days through an Instagram post. They recounted how their journey began without resources or permissions, ultimately shaping their identities. “When we returned to India, Mumbai deeply influenced us. The chaos of the city, newspaper clippings, and its unique lifestyle inspired us to write a ‘love letter’ to this city. This idea gave birth to ‘Shor in the City,'” they wrote.

They further elaborated, “We shot during the busiest time of the year, Ganesh Chaturthi. At that time, we used early digital cameras, facing challenges like bright lights and overexposure. Initially, we started the project without permission, proper equipment, or even a tripod. We funded it ourselves, and later, some producers joined in to help complete the film.”

Describing the film, they noted, “It was created with genuine and completely independent thought. We did what felt right. Releasing it was a unique experience. Looking back, ‘Shor’ marked a new beginning for us—finding our identity and voice. Who can forget that first small earning we received for writing, directing, and producing? It was enough to buy a second-hand car… and finally return Sita’s car to her.”

Concluding their reflections, they stated, “We still vividly remember the madness of each shooting day, the resourcefulness, and the joy of completing work amidst challenges. We are grateful for this noise, the city, and that beginning where everything started. This noise continues to resonate today.”
