New DelhiMuharram, which marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, will be observed in India with a public holiday on July 6, 2025 (Saturday). However, the actual date of observance may vary slightly depending on the sighting of the moon, which could shift the holiday to July 7 in some states.

This day holds deep religious significance, especially for the Shia Muslim community, who commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain on the 10th day of Muharram, also known as Ashura. Across the country, a number of essential services and institutions will remain closed to mark the solemn occasion.

The Significance of Muharram

Muharram is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. It is particularly significant for the Shia Muslim community, who observe mourning rituals in memory of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. The 10th day, Ashura, is marked with processions, prayers, and remembrance gatherings.

It is a day of reflection, sacrifice, and mourning, and is observed with solemnity across India. Public events, entertainment, and celebrations are generally avoided on this day.

Important Note for Citizens

If you have banking work, stock market trading, or travel planned for July 6 or 7, it’s advisable to check local notifications, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Jammu & Kashmir, where the observance may be more widespread.

Keep an eye on updates from local administration, schools, or official portals for confirmed holiday dates based on moon sighting.
