Morne Morkel Highlights the Potential of Nitish Kumar Reddy in Indian Cricket
Bowling coach Morne Morkel emphasizes the need for careful management of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddys talent in cricket.

Thiruvananthapuram, September 25 (Daily Kiran) : Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, has underscored the importance of effectively managing young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. He believes that Reddy possesses the ability to excel in bowling, batting, and fielding.
During a recent press conference, Morkel stated that providing Reddy with a clear role within the team and consistent playing opportunities could help him fully harness his talent. He expressed confidence that with the right guidance and patience, Reddy could become a key player for the team in the future.
Reddy made a remarkable comeback after recovering from a quadriceps injury, taking six wickets in the second and third T20 Internationals against Afghanistan earlier this month in New Delhi. Although he struggled in the first T20 match, his performance in the subsequent games was impressive. Reddy is set to participate in the ODI series against the West Indies starting September 27, but he has withdrawn from the 2026 Asian Games.
Morkel remarked, “In Reddy’s case, if we look at the T20 matches, his bowling has been impressive in various situations. He is always advised to keep things simple and to improve on the basics as much as possible. I believe he is a talented player in all three aspects: batting, bowling, and fielding.”
He added, “Reddy aspires to be a player who can create opportunities, which is a great mindset. However, we need to focus on how we can ask him to consistently perform well in the roles we want him to play, and how well he can execute the fundamental skills. This is another area where we need to provide him with opportunities to learn and grow.”
Morkel emphasized that there is still time to prepare Reddy, which could greatly benefit Indian cricket if he competes for the all-rounder position. He has the talent and capability to succeed, but it is crucial to manage him well and assign him a straightforward role within the team.
Addressing concerns about player fitness, Morkel reassured that the team management is closely monitoring workload in collaboration with the medical staff. This is to ensure that key all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana return to full fitness.
He stated, “We are continuously monitoring workload management to give players the best chance to recover and be considered for selection. We are excited about bringing back players like Hardik and Harshit, and planning with the medical team is part of our responsibilities. Each player has a specific plan, and we will keep track of that to determine the best way forward, ensuring that selectors have the strongest group to choose from.”
Morkel acknowledged that injuries are an unfortunate reality in international cricket but expressed confidence in India’s bench strength. He said, “Of course, you want your strongest and fully fit players on the field. Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game, and we certainly do not want them to occur. However, the good news is that we have excellent backup players. This provides a fantastic opportunity for these players to represent India, make a name for themselves, and compete. Hopefully, we can overcome the injury issues and everything will be fine by the end of the year, allowing us to move forward.”
