Monsoon Forecast: Heavy Rain with Thunderstorms Expected Across 23 States — IMD Issues Alerts

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide alert as the monsoon system intensifies. Over the past few days, heavy rainfall has caused significant disruption in several regions of the country. From South India to the Gangetic plains, severe rains accompanied by thunderstorms have impacted daily life. In many cities, road traffic is affected due to waterlogging, and residents are being advised to stay indoors when possible.

In eastern regions like West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand, heavy rainfall has led to localized flooding and transportation challenges. According to the IMD, a heavy rainfall alert with thunderstorms has been issued for 23 states and regions across the country. The following areas are likely to experience severe weather over the next 24 to 72 hours:

• North Konkan, Gujarat region, Gangetic West Bengal: Heavy rain forecast over the next 24 hours

• Jharkhand, Meghalaya: Rainfall with thunder and lightning

• Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar: Heavy rains likely

• Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Tripura: Severe weather conditions predicted

• Western Madhya Pradesh, Western Uttar Pradesh, Eastern Rajasthan: Rain activity to increase

• Saurashtra, Andaman Islands, Nagaland, Manipur: Heavy rain expected

• Mizoram, Kerala, Tamil Nadu: Intermittent showers predicted

Extended Rainfall Outlook in Central India

The IMD’s extended forecast warns of persistent rain activity in Central India for the next five days:

• Sub-Himalayan West Bengal: Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected between June 22 and 25

• Coastal West Bengal (Gangetic plains): Rain with thunderstorms on June 22 and again on June 25

• Bihar: Heavy rain likely between June 20 and 23

• Jharkhand and Odisha: Thunderstorms with heavy rain between June 20 and 22

• Madhya Pradesh: Widespread rainfall is expected to continue till June 25

Public Advisory

Residents in affected areas are advised to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone zones. It is recommended to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain hours, secure belongings, and stay updated with local weather bulletins.

The monsoon’s increased intensity this year underscores the need for preparedness across India’s urban and rural areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and emergency response teams are on standby in vulnerable districts.
