New Delhi, September 24 (Daily Kiran) : Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi addressed recent media reports questioning the Election Commission of India, asserting that dissent is an inherent part of democracy. Speaking in New Delhi, Naqvi emphasized that such disagreements can only flourish in democratic systems, not in autocratic regimes.
He criticized the opposition, suggesting that their attempts to tarnish democratic institutions stem from their despair over electoral defeats. “The Election Commission’s journey began in 1952, and since then, it has overseen more than 18 general elections and numerous state assembly elections,” he noted. “The Commission has been a witness to various electoral reforms and has played a significant role in the democratic process.”
While Naqvi clarified that he is not a spokesperson for the Election Commission, he expressed confidence that the Commission would address any internal disagreements. “You cannot dismantle a democratic institution merely by labeling it as disagreeable,” he stated.
Responding to ongoing criticism from the opposition, Naqvi launched a sharp rebuttal, indicating that some individuals attempt to sow distrust and confusion regarding democratic institutions following their electoral losses. “Those from defeated political dynasties consistently try to create an atmosphere of suspicion and fear regarding these institutions,” he remarked.
He added, “If you don’t honor the nation and start making baseless statements, it won’t work in this country. We have witnessed both the manipulation of ballot papers and the misuse of electronic voting machines.”
Naqvi further asserted that the opposition is in a state of depression following their electoral defeats. “In their despair, they cannot undermine or defame democratic institutions,” he said. “Those engaging in disruptive theatrics to dismantle democratic institutions will not succeed.”
When questioned about Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav‘s upcoming PDA rally, Naqvi quipped that the definition of PDA should be clarified first. “I wish him well in his endeavors to form a government, but they need to establish what PDA means. Changing its definition at every step will only confuse the public,” he remarked.
Regarding a poster depicting Akhilesh Yadav as Lord Krishna, Naqvi warned, “Such misconceptions can be detrimental. There are already signs of short-circuiting in his rally, which could lead to unexpected setbacks.”
