Michael Vaughan Claims South Africas Blunder Allowed India to Win T20 World Cup

New Delhi, March 13: Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has stated that South Africa’s mistakes enabled the Indian team to clinch the T20 World Cup for the third time.

In a recent cricket podcast, Vaughan explained that if South Africa had lost to the West Indies, India would not have advanced to the semifinals. Instead, the West Indies would have taken India’s place, denying the Indian team the chance to win the title and make history.

Vaughan remarked, “Let me tell you who I think is the dumbest team in the tournament? South Africa. Because if they had allowed the West Indies to defeat them in the Super 8, India would have been out. I’m just saying—if they had eliminated India, the momentum would have stopped. The best team in the tournament could have been stopped from winning the T20 World Cup by knocking them out. South Africa missed that opportunity.”

The former captain emphasized that to win a tournament, one must eliminate the strongest competitors.

He continued, “By winning that game, they kept the winning streak alive. India then defeated Zimbabwe, followed by a quarter-final win against the West Indies, and then beat England in the semifinals.”

It is noteworthy that the Indian team, which won the T20 World Cup 2026, became the first to win the title three times and to host the T20 World Cup successfully. India triumphed over New Zealand in the final. This marked India’s fourth appearance in the T20 World Cup final and their third victory, while New Zealand faced defeat once again, having lost to Australia in the 2021 final as well.
