New Zealands Gift to India: Mohammad Amir Questions Tactics After World Cup Defeat

New Delhi, March 9: Former Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir has labeled New Zealand’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 as a “gift” to India, criticizing the Kiwi team’s strategy.

Amir expressed his discontent with New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner’s decisions, suggesting that poor choices led to India’s victory.

During a Pakistani television show, Amir stated, “I couldn’t understand the changes made in New Zealand’s bowling. Even when it was clear that Abhishek Sharma was struggling against spin, they didn’t utilize spin enough.”

He noted that he has followed the New Zealand team since 2005 but observed them playing under pressure like never before.

Amir acknowledged that India demonstrated in this match that both bowlers and batsmen can win major tournaments.

He had previously predicted that India would not reach the semi-finals or finals, yet India not only defeated England in the semi-finals but also clinched the title by beating New Zealand by a significant margin of 96 runs in the final. Following India’s triumph, Amir faced criticism from Indian cricket fans on social media.

In the match, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first. With contributions from Sanju Samson (89 runs), Abhishek Sharma (52 runs), Ishan Kishan (54 runs), and Shivam Dube (26 runs), India set a target of 256 runs, finishing with 255 runs for 5 wickets.

Chasing 256, New Zealand collapsed for just 159 runs in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs, while Axar Patel claimed 3 wickets for 27 runs in 3 overs. Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Abhishek Sharma each took 1 wicket.

Sanju Samson was named Player of the Series, while Jasprit Bumrah received the Player of the Match award.
