Meta Takes Major Step for Childrens Online Safety in India

New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government is actively working to curb harmful information on social media platforms, emphasizing that the safety of children online is a fundamental principle for operating in the country. This commitment is non-negotiable.

In a significant move, Meta has agreed to report child safety issues to relevant law enforcement agencies. This initiative is seen as a crucial first step toward making the platform safer for children, although much work remains to be done.

The government is also in ongoing discussions with other platforms to identify and remove harmful content proactively. Officials have made it clear that platforms failing to take active measures for child safety will face repercussions.

Earlier, a report dated August 18 highlighted discussions between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Meta, focusing on managing illegal content that reappears on the platform after being removed.

The government believes that merely removing content is insufficient; it is equally important to prevent its re-distribution. Meta has begun implementing various measures in this direction, particularly as child sexual exploitation material is considered a serious crime under Indian law.

The company is enhancing its systems to identify, remove, and prevent the re-upload of such content. Reports indicate that Meta is also addressing cases where previously flagged and removed content reappears in new forms or through different mediums, employing advanced technical systems and identification mechanisms.

Sources indicate that the central government has clarified to digital platforms, including Meta, that they will not benefit from ‘safe harbor’ protections if they do not comply with applicable Indian laws. This protection generally provides limited legal immunity to platforms for user-shared content.

Officials have also stressed that the government’s aim is not to impose censorship on social media platforms. Instead, the primary focus is on ensuring compliance with Indian laws and regulations. The government believes that digital platforms should strike a balance between social responsibility and potential harm.
