He revealed that he had been searching for Manoj for three years. So impressed was Varma by Manoj’s acting that he decided to cast him in his film immediately.
Although he initially received a minor role, Ram Gopal Varma promised Manoj a bigger opportunity in his next film. This promise was fulfilled with the film ‘Satya,’ where Manoj portrayed the character Bhiku Mhatre, catapulting him to stardom overnight. His iconic line, “Mumbai ka king kaun? Bhiku Mhatre,” remains etched in the minds of audiences. For this film, he received a National Award, establishing his unique identity in Bollywood.
