
Imphal, March 8: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced on Sunday that the upcoming state budget will allocate ₹350 crore to assist women affected by recent ethnic violence in the state.
He stated that this provision is expected to benefit approximately 350,000 women who have suffered due to the unrest.
The announcement was made during the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration at the Imphal City Convention Center, themed “Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls.” Addressing the audience, he prayed that those displaced by the unprecedented crisis in Manipur could finally return to their homes.
Commending the courage and resilience of Manipuri women, the Chief Minister noted their significant contributions to the state’s economy and various political and social movements throughout its history.
He highlighted the struggles of many widowed mothers who have raised and educated their children despite facing hardships, often by selling vegetables in markets or engaging in traditional handloom work. Acknowledging the sacrifices made by women in society, Singh stated, “We are their sons and daughters.”
Legislator Sagolsem K.B. Devi emphasized her participation in International Women’s Day celebrations every year. She stressed the importance of women being well-informed about government welfare schemes and their constitutional rights to protect themselves from discrimination and injustice.
She encouraged more women to actively participate in such programs.
In his speech, Manipur’s Chief Secretary Punit Kumar Goyal remarked that this day is celebrated to recognize the invaluable contributions of women in society. He stated, “In Manipur, women have always been the backbone of society.”
During the program, an audio-visual presentation on the ‘Mission Shakti’ initiative was showcased, focusing on women’s safety, security, and economic empowerment. The Chief Minister also honored weightlifter and Padma Shri awardee Kunjarani Devi, along with renowned Manipuri folk singer Mangka Mayanglambam. The event, organized by the Social Welfare Department, was attended by Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, several legislators, and senior officials from various departments.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Legislative Assembly’s budget session will resume on Monday, March 9, where several critical issues are expected to be discussed.
