Mumbai, April 20: Mamta Kulkarni, who once starred alongside Bollywood giants like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan, has shifted her focus to spirituality. At the peak of her career, she made the surprising decision to step away from the film industry. Little did anyone know that the actress known for hits like “Tiranga,” “Aashiq Aawara,” “Karan Arjun,” and “Kranti Veer” would leave Bollywood abruptly, primarily due to her mother’s influence.
Born into a Marathi family on April 20, Mamta struggled with both Hindi and English but still managed to shine in the blockbuster films of the 1990s. Before making her mark in Hindi cinema, she attempted to establish her career in Tamil films, debuting in 1991 with “Nannbaragal” and later appearing in the Telugu romance drama “Prema Shikharam” in 1992.
That same year, her luck changed when she entered Bollywood with the multi-starrer “Tiranga.” Despite being part of an ensemble cast, her stunning looks and curly hair captivated audiences. Mamta has often mentioned that she faced no difficulties in securing roles; she simply aimed to accept as many offers as possible.
Her breakout film, “Aashiq Aawara,” released in 1993, catapulted her to stardom, earning her the Filmfare New Face Award and solidifying her status in the industry. However, by the year 2000, she chose to pursue spirituality as her new path.
A turning point came when her relationship with Dubai-based underworld drug lord Vicky Goswami made it increasingly difficult for her to find work in Bollywood. Directors began to shy away from collaborating with her, leading to her departure from the film industry in 2002.
In an interview, Mamta revealed that before leaving, she had received offers for 30 to 40 films. However, she felt a deep sense of disillusionment. After nine days of prayer for her mother, who had passed away, she lost the desire to work in Hindi cinema. “I spent 23 years away from the industry that gave me everything, and I have no desire to return to films,” she stated.
