Barrackpore, August 9: West Bengal‘s North 24 Parganas district witnessed chaos as Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and former Chief Minister, faced a hostile protest during her convoy’s journey. Protesters reportedly blocked her convoy, throwing mud, water bottles, and footwear at her vehicle. Banerjee claimed that this incident occurred in the presence of police.
Banerjee was en route to meet the family of a deceased TMC worker when her convoy was intercepted by protesters already gathered in Halishahar. The situation escalated quickly, with the crowd surrounding her vehicle and chanting slogans against her.
In a media interaction following the incident, Banerjee alleged that anti-social elements hurled large stones at her car in front of the police. She expressed concern over the severity of the attack, stating, “If the windows had been open, my head would have been shattered. We could have all been killed. I have never seen anything like this. What is happening?”
She also accused the police of providing security to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) instead. This incident raised serious questions about the law and order situation in the state.
Reports indicate that the TMC worker whose family Banerjee was visiting had died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody on Friday, creating a tense atmosphere in the area.
As Banerjee’s convoy approached Halishahar, the angry crowd obstructed the vehicles, throwing mud, water bottles, and footwear at her car. She alleged that stones and bricks were also thrown during the protest.
Notably, since the change of power in Bengal, TMC leaders have increasingly been targeted. Following attacks on TMC MPs and MLAs, Banerjee herself has now become a target, with other party MPs present during the incident.
