Mumbai, August 9: Renowned director Shakeel Noorani has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault case. The police apprehended him at a farmhouse in Satara and presented him in court. The court has remanded Noorani to police custody until August 12.
The 73-year-old director was arrested following a complaint filed by a 33-year-old actress, alleging rape and sexual harassment. The Malvani police have registered the case. According to the complainant, the incident occurred in 2016, but the case was only filed recently.
As per Mumbai police, the actress first met Noorani in 2016 at an award ceremony in Lokhandwala. She claims that the director, known for films like “Bade Dilwala” and “Joru Ka Ghulam,” discussed an upcoming project with her and asked her to contact him for work.
In her FIR, the woman alleged that she later visited Noorani’s residence in Malvani to read a script. According to her complaint, Noorani offered her a soft drink, after which she became unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, she reported that Noorani showed her a video on his mobile phone and threatened her, stating that he would release it if she contacted the police or informed her family.
The actress accused Noorani of using the alleged video to intimidate her and sexually assaulting her multiple times. She also claimed that after their sexual encounters, she was repeatedly given contraceptive pills. Following the FIR, police initiated an investigation and discovered that Noorani was at a farmhouse in the Medha area of Satara district.
A local police team located Noorani and took him to the Medha police station, after which Malvani police officials arrived in Satara to formally arrest him. After his arrest, Noorani was presented in Borivali Holiday Court by Malvani police, where he was remanded to police custody until August 12. Noorani has written, produced, and directed films such as “Bade Dilwala” (1999) and “Joru Ka Ghulam” (2000).
