Kolkata, August 9: On Sunday, all government health centers and medical institutions in West Bengal observed a two-minute silence in memory of the RG Kar rape-murder victim. This solemn occasion marked the second anniversary of the tragic incident, during which a candle was lit in tribute to the victim.
This is the first time the government has officially commemorated the victim. Last year, the previous Trinamool Congress government did not hold any such event.
Prior to the observance, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met with State Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee on Saturday to discuss the program. The Chief Minister announced that all government hospitals would participate in the moment of silence on Sunday.
Shantanu Sen, a former Rajya Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress, was present at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He has been an outspoken advocate for the RG Kar movement from the beginning. After the silence, he spoke about the ongoing investigation.
He thanked the Chief Minister for taking steps to uncover the truth in this case. He also called for an investigation into those who destroyed evidence related to the rape-murder case.
The medical community has echoed calls for a swift investigation and enhanced security at hospitals to prevent such incidents in the future.
The rape and murder of a female doctor in the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, shocked the nation. Various segments of society organized movements, protests, vigils, hunger strikes, and continuous marches demanding justice.
In the two years since, much has changed. Those who were in opposition are now part of the ruling party. The victim’s mother has been elected as a BJP legislator.
A special event in memory of the victim is being held in Panihati, North 24 Parganas district, where the victim’s mother serves as a legislator. This event will take place at the Lok Sanskriti Bhavan, organized under the banner of a trust established in the victim’s name. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is also expected to attend the tribute.
So far, only one individual has been arrested in connection with the doctor’s rape and murder case. Following the incident, the state police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. Later, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to take over the investigation. They have not arrested anyone new in this case. Evidence against Sanjay remained, and a charge sheet was filed. After charges were established, the trial proceeded swiftly in the Sealdah Court, where the judge found Sanjay guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
