Kolkata, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee, candidate Sanchita Pradhan Day has withdrawn her nomination ahead of the upcoming by-election in Nandigram. This unexpected move has raised eyebrows and led Banerjee to voice serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the electoral process.
Sanchita Pradhan Day retracted her nomination shortly after meeting with Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari at the state secretariat, Nabanna. She was announced as the TMC candidate for the Nandigram by-election scheduled for October 6.
As of now, there has been no official statement regarding the reasons behind her withdrawal. With the nomination deadline having passed on September 16, the TMC cannot field another candidate for this seat.
Despite this development, the electoral landscape in Nandigram remains competitive. Another faction of the TMC, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, has nominated Mohammad Ateshamul Haque. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has put forward Shanti Gopal Giri, while the Congress party has nominated Milan Pradhan, and the BJP has fielded Hasirani Rath.
In the meantime, Mamata Banerjee has raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process, accusing the BJP of manipulating the system. She claimed that artificial intelligence is being misused to influence elections, citing similar irregularities in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and West Bengal.
Banerjee criticized the BJP for undermining democracy, the Constitution, and the educational system. She also alleged that those who oppose the government face repercussions, including being blocked on social media platforms.
Additionally, Banerjee questioned why there has been no investigation into the reported burning of 4,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) after the elections.
