A significant fire in a Kolkata market destroyed multiple shops, but fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

Kolkata, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : A severe fire broke out on Tuesday in a market in the Bagha Jatin area of South Kolkata, destroying several shops. Initial estimates suggest that around 15 shops were engulfed in flames. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities.

According to sources in the state fire department, the blaze originated in one shop before rapidly spreading to others nearby. A fire department official stated, “Fifteen fire engines responded promptly and it took nearly three hours to bring the fire under control. The situation is now fully managed.”

Local police from the Netaji Nagar station arrived at the scene shortly after reports of the fire emerged in the morning. The fire department was alerted immediately. As the intensity of the fire increased, additional fire engines were dispatched to the area. Firefighters worked diligently to prevent the flames from spreading further.

Fire department officials indicated that the fire likely started in a shop selling religious items around 4 AM. While the exact cause remains unclear, initial assessments confirm that approximately 15 shops were destroyed. A thorough investigation will provide a clearer picture of the damage.

Traffic on Raja S.C. Mallik Road, which connects Garfa and Jadavpur, was disrupted due to the fire. Police were present to manage the situation. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.

Following the incident, many traders rushed to the Bagha Jatin market, devastated by the loss of their businesses, especially during the festive season. Sharbari Mukherjee, a member of the legislative assembly from Jadavpur representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, was also seen at the site.
