Varanasi, June 1: The Varanasi Police Commissionerate has successfully arrested an individual in a significant case of illegal cannabis trafficking. The operation was conducted by the Chitpur police station under the directives of the police commissioner of Varanasi.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Gaurav Kumar spoke with a news agency, stating that this action was part of a special campaign against crime and drug trafficking. Under the guidance of the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Kashi zone and the supervision of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, the team, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police for Bhelupur and the Officer-in-Charge of Chitpur, conducted checks on suspicious individuals and vehicles in the area.
During the checks, the police team encountered a suspicious individual, Ajit Kumar Gupta, in the Malihan Basti area. Upon searching him, they seized 978 grams of illegal cannabis and ₹10,020 in cash. The accused, Ajit Kumar Gupta, son of Basant Kumar Gupta, is originally from Singha Chawar Khurd in Ballia district and was residing in a rented house in Malihan Basti, Chitpur police station, Varanasi.
Based on the seizure, a case has been registered under the NDPS Act at the Chitpur police station. The accused has been arrested and is being processed for further legal action. The arresting team included Inspector Rakesh Kumar Gautam, Sub-Inspector Aditya Kumar Mishra (in charge of the Sundarpur outpost), Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar Singh, Head Constable Rajay Bharti, and Sudhir Yadav.
ACP Gaurav Kumar emphasized that the police team at Chitpur has performed commendably in this ongoing campaign directed by the police commissioner of Varanasi. Strict actions will be taken against those involved in the illegal drug trade, and no suspect will be spared.
Police sources indicate that the accused is being interrogated to uncover the source of the cannabis and identify any accomplices. The police are conducting such operations across various police stations to clamp down on drug trafficking in Varanasi.
